We got up this morning and hurriedly packed our stuff up before heading to McDonalds for breakfast (i.e. to use the wi-fi). There was some talk of going to the beach first but I had to put my foot down. Food comes first.
During the breakfast conversation it transpired that Kim and I were suffering from our golfing efforts the previous day. Who'd have thought that golf could be such a good workout. Claire claimed not to have any aches or pains but I think she was just putting on a brave face.
It was baking hot and we were on the beach for 10.30. The tide was right in and the waves were doing some really weird things. We were desperate to go for a swim to cool down but had to content ourselves with splashing about at knee depth, as any deeper the waves either threatened to knock us over or suck us out to sea. We heard on the news later that that is what actually happened to a few people further down the coast, and some of them died!
At midday we called it a day as it was getting far too hot. We went back to McDonalds for lunch and then went to the Australian Reptile Park which was vaguely on the way back to Kim's. It was boiling there too, and with it being inland there was no refreshing sea breeze either.
The Reptile Park is a small zoo with a variety of birds and animals, mainly Australian, and quite a lot of reptiles.
Once inside, we had a little disagreement over the bird card. Claire was keen to tick off all the Australian birds there. I thought that ticking off captive birds was cheating. We later agreed on a compromise of a different kind of tick.
We did spot the much anticipated Splendid Fairy Wren whilst looking at the alligators, which was indeed splendid, with a very pointy tail. I also saw my first Koalas, which were cute, but not my favourite bears.
There were quite a lot of lizards and crocodiles, and there was one while apparently is the biggest crocodile in New South Wales, which put Russell to shame a bit.
We then had to endure the Friday afternoon traffic heading back into Sydney. By the time we got back, Claire and I were exhausted, although Kim was full of beans. We stayed in with a Dominos pizza and a bottle of wine while Kim went to meet up with The Bad Influence. Before anyone comments, yes, we really did have two McDonald's and one Dominos and nothing else to eat today.
Tomorrow we're going to a barbecue with Claire's little brother (all 6' 2" of him) and his mum. I'm told there might be some parrots there as well!
